TWELVE
A few minutes later, we were all in my cottage: Attie, Camille, and I. Derek was out cold on the couch in the small living room after the three of us had manhandled him there.
Camille had been rattling around in the kitchen, but was now back outside on the porch, talking to Attie. I heard the sound of water boiling and then the scream of the kettle, so I walked into the kitchen to take charge.
There was a blue and white striped mug on the counter. I was about to pop a tea bag into it when I saw there was already something in it. I picked it up and sniffed: herbs of some sort. I guessed it was for Derek, but damn, I wanted a cup of tea too after what Iâd just been through. I pulled another mug out of the cupboard, and then two more, in case Attie and Camille wanted a hot drink too.
I poured the water over Derekâs tea, then lifted the mug to blow on it. An unusual aroma wafted up, reminding me of citrus and daisies and something exotic I couldnât put a name to. I inhaled the steam, and a strange sensation came over me, as if the world was moving on its axis, but rather than being scared, I wanted to lie down and sleep.
âWhat are you doing, Diana?â
Camille stood behind me, a look of concern on her face. âDonât touch that tea.â
I shook my head, wondering why she wasnât grateful I had taken over. âI was just cooling it down.â
Attie joined us as well. âWe donât even know if weâre going to need it yet.â
âOh, no.â Was this a magic tea? I had one of Attieâs special teas before, and it was quite an experience, one sheâd never let me repeat. âWhatâs in this tea? Are you two trying to knock off Derek?â
Camille smirked, revealing sparkling white teeth that shone against her dark skin. She was a striking woman, but out here away from the stresses and strains of school life, her beauty seemed even more luminescent. âItâs my special blend. And the thought of knocking Derek off never crossed my mind.â
My eyes bored into hers. âIâm calling bullshit on that one, Camille.â
âI wouldnât do that to someone I worked with. Especially given people at school might know weâve all come away for the weekend. There could be too many difficult questions from the police if Derek was found dead after heâd been away with me.â
Attie snickered. âItâs a memory blocker, Diana. If Derek canât handle the truth, he wonât have to. It will be easier for him this way.â
That sounded like the sort of tea I could use. âCan I get some of that for after my next court date? Iâd pay good money for it.â
âDiana, I can do better than that,â Camille told me. âI have all sorts of other teas. I could make you one to give to your ex and youâd never have to worry about court again.
